Expendable uses a pretty low-brow game concept, but there's no denying that there's a certain charm about a mindless shooter--it's just too bad that this isn't a good one. Instead, it is a cookie-cutter game that relies too heavily on its veil of gaudy special effects which, no matter how flashy, can't cover up this game's ugly flaws. Within five minutes of trigger time, I was already frustrated with my Dual Shock as I tried to grasp the game's crappy control scheme. After awhile you get used to it, but only after realizing that all you really need to control your soldier is to use the shoulder buttons to strafe (slide left and right while still aiming forward) around enemies back and forth while dodging their bullets. Hell--since you just slide back and forth the whole game, you barely even need the control pad or analog sticks. This is almost a blessing in disguise since when you do use them, you'll notice that they are very inaccurate and clumsy. The rest of the game isn't much better. The animation is shoddy--it looks like your soldier slides around the battlefield rather than running, and most of the humanoid enemies aren't much better. Expendable might have been worth your time if its two-player cooperative and Deathmatch modes were any fun. But, like the rest of the game, any amount of entertainment you could have gotten from those modes was also deemed expendable.
Expendable is set in the future and even after reading the storyline a few times, I am still not really clear on what the hell the game is about. Something to do with humans inhabiting barren worlds trying to survive. Aliens then attacked the peaceful colonies and nobody has been heard from there since. You are dropped in to find out what happened to the people and kick a little alien butt along the way. You play as an expendable, a soldier grown in a ship with only one objective: killing. All that really matters is that you are in for some seriously insane blasting your way through 20 levels. Get ready for a sore thumb.
In the first phases of the game you embark on missions against the Faithful and the Brood, and here your \"superhero\" agents can develop their skills via battle experience. To back up your core team of eight there's a pool of \"expendable\" agents; these too have skills, but mere mortal ones such as weapon accuracy and specialisation, health, reactions and stealth. Success in missions lets you spend experience points developing your team as you see fit. You can concentrate on developing the special agents, but with the tough missions ahead you need some well-trained regular troops as backup for when injuries occur. Spreading the experience around is probably the wisest strategy. The game is split into a number of Acts or phases; in each your mission types and maps are generated to be in keeping with the game situation. Your aim is to keep the enemy strength down (initially by restricting the number of strongholds they build on the map), while finding clues to the cause of the plague. This includes capturing live Brood specimens, for example, a task made tricky by the fact the only way to do this is by using stun grenades.

Alien: Isolation was designed to resemble the original Alien film rather than its more action-oriented 1986 sequel Aliens, and features a similar lo-fi, 1970s vision of what the future could look like. It runs on an engine built to accommodate the Alien's behaviour and technical aspects such as atmospheric and lighting effects. Creative Assembly intended to make Alien: Isolation a third-person game, but used first-person to create a more intense experience. Several downloadable content packs were released, some of which relive scenes from the original film.
Alien: Isolation supports additional in-game content in the form of downloadable content packs. The first two packs, Crew Expendable and Last Survivor, were made available at the time of release. Crew Expendable, included in the \"Nostromo Edition\", relives a scene from Alien and involves the player controlling Ripley, Dallas or Parker attempting to flush an alien creature from the Nostromo's air vents into the ship's airlock. Last Survivor, which was originally made available to players who pre-ordered at certain retailers, is set during the film's finale and involves the player controlling Ripley as she tries to activate the Nostromo's self-destruct sequence and reach the escape shuttle.

A collection featuring the base game and all the downloadable content packs was released for Linux, OS X, PlayStation 4 and Xbox One in late 2015.
Simple blazing shooter from top down perspective and rich in graphical effects. For an advanced 1999 game, it has quite good compatibility. Notoriously known benchmark that popularized environmental bump mapping. I used built in timedemo 1.Falcon 4.0 - MicroProse - DX6This is advanced and most demanding game in the suite.
